Transportation

There is no regularly scheduled public bus system in Dominica. New students should arrange for transportation from the airport by contacting the Housing Office. Students who have lived in Dominica are sometimes able to share transportation for a little less than the US$15 you will pay through the Housing Office, but please do not let "old hands" talk you into avoiding transportation provided by the Housing Office. You get something for your US$15. For example, your driver will expect you to have a lot of luggage and will have room for it, he will also know where you are to be taken, and you will be met by someone who can answer your questions and has the Housing Office Information Packet to give you.

Privately owned "transports" (vans) ply the roads looking for paying customers. They are readily available during weekday, daylight hours, but are scarce at night and on weekends - especially Sunday.

Transports for hire have an “H” on the license plate. To get somewhere, put your arm up to flag whatever transport comes by. There is only one road, so there are only two destinations - up or down. Campus to Portsmouth is EC$1, to Roseau is EC$7.50. Hitch hiking is a normal practice in Dominica. At night the University arranges for occasional transportation from the library. Please note that the transports are also used for private hire, but when used as such, costs will be much higher.
